Character History and Personality:
It is a rare man that does not hold at least some anger inside of himself. Most are swirl of combinations, anger and calm, rage and contentment. Most are able find their balance point, to reign themselves in when the bad grows too intense, to counteract it and remain who they are meant to be.
Bruce started off with a raw deal. He knows that. He tries not to let it be an excuse. He had a homelife he wouldn't wish on anyone, and that forms who you become inside as you grow. His mind grew one way and his heart grew another, and if his mind was maybe healthier than his heart, he didn't think anyone could blame him for looking in that direction while neglecting the other. It's easy to ignore yourself when you're too busy learning and working and discovering.
And he was good at it. Good enough to get attention, good enough to be sought after. …Not good enough to avoid the pride that caused his fall. He'd been so busy striving for more that he didn't realize how much he already had. Not until it was gone - replaced by a thing that demanded his attention and would not be denied. A thing that lived where his hurt heart always had.
In an instant, he lost so much. And for a while, he tried to reverse it. To backpedal his way to a life that no longer existed, no matter how much he wished and how much blood he drew to test. None of it stopped the anger and pain, the loss of control and the widespread destruction. It didn't bring back the people he'd killed, those he'd hurt, the things he'd ruined. It didn't stop the guilt, once it set in. Hooked hard into the softest part of him and needing to limit the addition of any more.
He ran. More than once, he ran. Unwilling to be used as a weapon, either accidental or purposeful. Unwilling to be the cause of more and more, even though he was. He always would be, and that won't change. And for a while, the guilt of that overwhelmed him. It was no way to live, but there was no way to die. And so he shifted focus - to control and to aid.
He was… if not happy, he was at least calm. No, not calm. Steady. And with a… a purpose. There was a goodness to being able to help people. He'd done so much damage, damage he could never really atone for, not with the deaths and destruction on his hand. There was no one that could absolve him of the things he'd done, and so few people that could even understand the hard heavy guilt and desire to make things right in some small way. In those distant cities, no one looked at him and saw the Other Guy. They just saw the American doctor with the stilted words who was able to help them when their family was sick.
It was a life. And if it wasn't the one he'd originally wanted for himself, of high tech labs and a woman he loved and the opportunity for a family of his own… well, he did say that he doesn't every time get what he wants.
And then things changed. Maybe it had been naive to think that he was completely off everyone's radar. Just because General Ross hadn't ambushed him again didn't mean that he'd truly been hidden. He did appreciate the change in tactic, though. Sending a beautiful woman after him instead of a team of armed and armored men. Asking nicely earned points. Or at least kept a city standing.
He should have maybe expected what happened next. In retrospect, how many ways could that all have ended? Only with the other guy making a very loud and destructive appearance. Okay, there were some outlying facts that couldn't have been anticipated. Aliens, gods, a space portal - those were all new. A team, friends - those were even more surprising even than the aliens. Surprising. Not unwanted. Even if he's still wary.
Wary of their motives, wary of his own control. Having a lab buddy doesn't stop the constant rumble of rage in the back of his mind. Like angry hornets waiting to be released. A chronic migraine of anger. But he does have more people again now. And everything is changing. He saved a man's life when he had so little control over anything. A man that sits around and tries to confess parts of his life story, looking for answers and meaning that Bruce simply doesn't have to give. But maybe the discussion itself is enough to keep him in one place for a while.
And if it's not, he can always leave again. Apparently they know how to find him.
Journal/Key: Bruce has a quadrille lab notebook, one that could be found in the back of any highschool science room. His key looks like any that would be used to open a locked flammables cabinet (silver, small but sturdy).
